After nearly 50 years in public service and after a battle with cancer, former Maryland Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr. announced today he is retiring from politics.

Senate President Emeritus Miller stepped down from his presiding officer role in 2019 stating that the physical toll of the cancer treatments made it too difficult for him to continue his role as Senate President. In his resignation letter to current Senate President Bill Ferguson he writes, “My heart and mind remain strong, but my body has grown too weak to meet the demands of another legislative session.”

Senator Miller’s resignation is effective today.

Senator Miller represents District 27 in the body. The vacant seat will be subject to a Gubernatorial appointment, based on recommendations from the Democratic Central Committees of both Prince George’s and Calvert Counties.  The timeline of the replacement process means that there will be no one representing the 27th district when the General Assembly convenes its 2021 session on Jan. 13.
