House Economic Matters Committee Chair Delegate Dereck E. Davis was elected by his colleagues Thursday night to be the new State Treasurer of Maryland. Delegate Davis will succeed current State Treasurer Nancy D. Kopp, who announced her retirement after serving for almost two decades. Delegate Davis will be the second African-American to hold the position and the first State Treasurer from Prince George’s County.

Maryland Matters reported Delegate Davis as saying,

“The incredible show of support means a great deal to me. It is with a great deal of humility and a spirit of thanksgiving that I stand before you today as treasurer-elect for the state of Maryland.”

Davis’ 10-minute speech to his colleagues was full of reminiscences, inside jokes and gratitude to Kopp and legislative staffers — and especially his colleagues on Economic Matters.

“It’s truly been a blessing to be your chairman for 19 sessions,” he said.

Governor Hogan issued a press release Thursday congratulating Delegate Davis on his nomination.

“I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Delegate Dereck Davis on his selection as the next Maryland State Treasurer. Throughout his nearly 27 years in the House of Delegates, Dereck has served the people of Prince George’s County, and our entire state, with integrity and distinction.

“Dereck and I have always had a great relationship. I look forward to welcoming him to the Board of Public Works, and working with him to continue changing Maryland for the better.”

Delegate Davis is set to be sworn in on December 17th.
