Congratulations to Nicholas (Nick) Manis for being named to The Daily Record’s “2024 Lobbying & Government Affairs Power List.” This list represents the most powerful professionals who advocate in state and local government in Maryland.
From The Daily Record,
Nicholas G. Manis, managing partner of MCA, has presided over legislative and special event successes on behalf of clients such as the Motion Picture Association, the Baltimore Ravens, the Maryland Association of Certified Public Accountants and Pfizer. Manis has been an accomplished lobbyist and legislative analyst for more than 30 years and has played an instrumental role in forging innovative and economically enhancing partnerships among clients.
What is your most significant accomplishment?
Manis Canning & Associates is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. One of the most significant accomplishments has been to maintain the business that was started in 1974, to expand the Firm and become partners with John Favazza, Joe Bryce and Associates, Andrea Mansfield and Natasha Mehu, which has led to our longevity and growth.
What’s the biggest challenge facing the state of Maryland?
Maryland has a large projected budget deficit and a potentially divisive presidential election on the horizon. In light of these challenges, all elected officials should work together to find solutions that have the least negative impact on all Marylanders. The state must also balance climate change concerns with the need for growth so that Marylanders can live and work in the state.
What advice do you have for anyone looking to enter your profession?
I am reminded of the advice I learned from one of the best and most well-respected lobbyists to walk the halls in Annapolis — my father, George N. Manis. He taught me that your name is your bond and that you should always conduct yourself with honesty, integrity, and professionalism. We all come from different families, backgrounds, and geographic areas, and we are bound to disagree at times. But we should always treat people with respect and dignity no matter what opinions they have.
