Ahead of the 2024 General Assembly session, Senate President Bill Ferguson has announced changes to Senate committee leadership and membership.  Notably, he has appointed Senator Pamela Beidle to chair the Finance Committee. Senator Beidle will replace Senator Melony Griffith who resigned to lead the Maryland Hospital Association.

The appointments, noted in a letter to members of the Senate, are effective November 1, 2023 and are summarized below:

  • Senator Pamela Beidle will serve as chair of the Finance Committee.
  • Senator Joanne Benson will become majority whip.
  • Senator Alonzo Washington will move to the Finance Committee.
  • Senator Michael Jackson has been asked to serve as vice chair of the Senate Democratic Caucus.
  • Senator Antonio Hayes will serve as chair of the Executive Nominations Committee.
  • Senator Clarence Lam will serve as vice chair of the Executive Nominations Committee.
  • Senator Shelly Hettleman will assume the role of chair of the Rules Committee.
  • Senator Anthony Muse will serve as vice chair of the Rules Committee.
